As the rich deposits in the Shuijinjiu Mountain were discovered in the late 1890s, a settlement of more than 1000 people also began to surface in the region. In order to meet the educational needs of local children, schools were established in the gold mining town before the 1910s. Five elementary and secondary schools still stand in Shuijinjiu area, having successfully weathered the political transitions and educational reform of the past decades. This exhibition presents the development trajectory of the school system and life throughout the last century, as well as the history of the mining industry in the mining town region.

In the title “Five Minutes and Twenty-Four Seconds,” “five” indicates the 5 supervising teachers, and twenty-four the 24 student participants. Works in this exhibition, which are diverse in both theme and style, are the result of the students’ dedicated effort, mentored by the teachers. The exhibition is a unique melody of the 24 youths. The work might come across slightly awkward and experimental, but the spirit behind each piece weights much more than the piece itself. The ultimate sincerity is what the students want to convey through the exhibition.
